Of all the astrology aspects in an astrological chart, the conjunction reigns supreme.

An astrology chart is a representation of the positioning of the planets at a given moment in time. Where exactly the astrological planets are in relationship to one another, defines the planetary aspects in astrology. Aspects illustrate specific energetic influences in a person's life, as well as a moment of time. The conjunction is the most important of all the aspects in astrology.

Conjunction Astrology Aspects

When the distance between two or more astrological planets is extremely small, so much so, that the heavenly bodies appear to be almost in contact with one another in an astrology chart, then they are in conjunction. Some astrologers consider planets within the same zodiac sign to be in this type of relationship, although most modern astrologers only allow for a distance of less than ten degrees. In this way, planets residing in two different signs, yet being only a couple degrees apart, are still in conjunction with one another.

In this planetary aspect, or relationship, the energies of the planets act together. Unlike the hard astrological aspects, which are found by dividing a chart by multiples of two, and the soft aspects, found by dividing the chart by multiples of three, the conjunction is the result of dividing by one. The result is a very powerful, unified energy, which may easily dominate an individual's character and drive. The influences of two astrological planets in this aspect are always going to act with one another.

Reading a Conjunction in an Astrology Chart

Conjunctions can be considered focal parts of an astrology chart. The relationship between planets in this aspect may have an impact on every part of an individual's life, especially if the conjunction is with the Sun (the ego) or the Moon (emotional response). For example, someone with a Sun-Jupiter conjunction would likely be a confident, optimistic person, acting as such in everything that they do. The relationship between these two heavenly bodies may be so intrinsic to the individual's ego, that they are unaware that everyone does not feel as ready to take on the world as they do.

To understand how this type of aspect may manifest, it is important to examine the characteristics of the two or more planets in conjunction, and combine them. Take Venus, for example, which has influence over love, money, comfort, beauty, and equality. Combine this energy with that of Pluto — power, obsession, transformation, secrets, and destruction. The combination may yield power through money or beauty, an obsessive desire for social equality, and secret loves. Once the nature of the aspect is understood, it is time to look at all of the other factors which would color, express, or impact the conjunction. What astrological house the relationship is located in, what sign, and what other planets aspect the conjunction.

How to Focus this Strong Planetary Aspect

When examining an astrological chart reading, it is important to come to terms with this planetary aspect; learn how to effectively benefit from this energy, rather than be inhibited by it. The conjunction is not positive or negative in nature; but, it is certainly not passive either. The combination of planets becomes a powerful influence over an individual's nature.

To focus this aspect for positive growth, first, be aware of it. Then, think about how an excess of this energy, or a misdirection of this energy can be harmful. A Mars (courage and aggression) conjunction with the Sun (ego) may result in a very prideful, confrontational personality. This intense, heated energy can inhibit someone's growth if it is used to fight the wrong battles, and act compulsively. Directed towards protecting others or upholding the values that the individual holds dear, is a way to use this strength and power in a positive, constructive way.

By looking also at the other planetary aspects in relationship with the conjunction, especially the hard aspects, one may be able to see what problems need to be worked out for personal transformation. For example, if Mercury (communication) has a hard aspect, and therefore a challenging relationship, with the Sun-Mars conjunction, then perhaps dealing with issues of aggressive communication, stubborn fights and heated arguments, will help the person. Again, this energy can be directed towards courageously communicating what the individual believes in, and taking pride in identifying with this action.

There is much to be learned from an astrology chart reading. Understanding conjunctions, and other aspects in astrology, will help one work out the details of their own unique life, in order to reach their greatest potential.

Hi there, enjoyed your article but would like to add my two cents: The distance in degrees we allow for a conjunction is called the orb and varies with planets in question. Generally that orb ranges up to about 6 or so degrees in both directions. The other thing is that when planets conjunct the sun, a strange situation occurs we call "combust." -depending on the planet, the sun may overwhelm and "devour" conjunct body's properties... We must also look at the house and whether motion is direct or retrograde to see if these points of intense focus go inward, outward, or askew. On another note, I've found that when Pluto conjuncts it denotes a continuous process of transformation and activation of that planet in aspect.
