Real weight loss is attainable, but it takes time, patience and a plan. To lose weight you have to make shifts in your diet and lifestyle. These shifts have to be changes that you are willing to commit to even after the weight is gone. They do not need to be dramatic or challenging, but rather natural and healthy. Start by setting a weight loss goal and then developing a workable plan to suit your needs.
Realistic Weight Loss Goals
The first step to reaching your weight loss goals is to make a realistic goal. Aiming for too much too early can be discouraging. Also, losing weight quickly and with unhealthy tactics can often lead to later weight gain. According to the CDC's Division of Nutrition, Physical Activity and Obesity, people who lose one or two pounds a week are more likely to actually keep the weight off.
When setting your weight loss goals, keep this in mind. Try to shed two pounds a week and sometimes less. A realistic goal is seven pounds in two months or ten pounds in three months. This may mean that you will not have the body that you want in time for summer, but you will be on the road to true physical transformation.
Tips for Maintaining Weight Loss Goals
A realistic goal is the starting point, but how do you stick with the plan? Write it down. List all of your dietary changes, such as increasing fiber and nutrition intake with fresh fruits and vegetables and whole grains, and cutting out desserts and packaged snacks. Track your exercise goals as well, always trying to increase physical activity every two weeks. Start by walking for 20 minutes a day, five days a week. Later add more activities such as light weight training, swimming, or biking.
Stay positive. Even if you don't lose two pounds every week you are still on the road as you are sticking with your weight loss plan. As the metabolism increases with more exercise and you become more accustomed to healthy foods, reaching your weight loss goals will take less effort.
Lose weight with others. A great way to stay with your commitments is to commit to others. Join a yoga or aerobics class. Start walking with a friend. Talk about eating healthier with your family.
Starting off with realistic goals, losing weight can be a positive, transforming experience. Set goals, eat well and work out. The weight will come off.
