Try using anti-fungal essential oils for mold and mildew removal, instead of harsh chemicals.

In bathrooms, under carpets, between walls, household mold can grow in any environment with enough humidity and organic material. As fungus growth can be harmful to health, immediate mold and mildew removal is extremely important. The only problem is, most conventional cleaning agents, such as bleach, are toxic. A simple, natural solution, made with anti-fungal essential oils, can solve the dilemma of having to choose between mold and toxic cleaners.

Dangers of Household Mold

Household mold can be dangerous if neglected. Molds are tiny living organisms which exist almost everywhere. Just like bacteria, they are a natural part of the cycle of life, and have their own specific purpose. In some conditions, such as with mold growth in contained environments, these microorganisms can have an adverse effect on health.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, research done by the Institute of Medicine in 2004 did find a definite connection between the presence of mold and respiratory illness. Healthy people may experience trouble breathing, coughing, and other respiratory symptoms. Those with asthma or allergies, may have increased symptoms.

How does household mold cause these problems? Molds release tiny spores, which become airborne. They may attach themselves to clothes, people, animals, and travel from one environment to another. They can enter homes through open windows and ventilation systems. When mold spores settle in an area with both humidity and food material (fabric, dust, insulation, cardboard), they thrive and multiply. Airborne spores can be inhaled, which is what causes a negative respiratory reaction. Quick removal of known mold and mildew will prevent any health problems from this prevalent microorganism.

Anti-Fungal Essential Oils to Kill Mold

Bleach will kill mold, but so will natural, anti-fungal essential oils. Essential oils are a safe, non-toxic, yet still effective way to deal with mold. There is no harm or risk from breathing the air, or general exposure, as there is with chemicals such as bleach.

To make a natural mold removal solution, blend thirty drops of an anti-fungal essential oil with sixteen ounces of water in a plastic spray bottle. Shake this mixture well. Spray on mold. There is no need to wipe off, in fact, it is better to leave this solution on.

The most potent essential oil for mold is tea tree oil. Tea tree essential oil is a powerful antiseptic, killing fungus, bacteria, and other harmful microorganisms. There are several other essential oils which can be used as well. Use one or more of the following.

  • Tea tree essential oil
  • Lavender essential oil
  • Cedarwood essential oil
  • Cinnamon bark essential oil
  • Patchouli essential oil

Tea tree oil has a strong, petrol-clean smell, which would overpower the other scents. All the other anti-fungal essential oils blend very well together, especially cedarwood and cinnamon bark.

Mold and Mildew Removal and Prevention

Household mold can turn up anywhere. To manage and prevent mold, try cleaning with anti-fungal essential oils on a regular basis. Use the same natural mold removal solution as an all-purpose cleaner for the kitchen and bathroom. Spray shower tiles and tub surfaces with the solution after bathing. Essential oils offer an ideal way to care for the home, without sacrificing personal well-being. They can be used frequently, safely, and effectively, even for the difficult job of mold and mildew removal.

I love the idea of treating mold and cleaning the house with tea trea oil.
I have two questions though:
1) how much do I spray? (Currently I need to treat must/mold in carpet. It is making us sick.)
2) How does your ratio of 30 drops oil to 16oz water (2 cups) compare to most ratios I see in articles similar to this that call for a ratio of 2 tsp oil to 16oz water (2 cups)?
I am assuming that 30 drops oil will not even fill ONE teaspoon as 30 drops is not even 1/2 tsp.
Thank you for your article and for answering my questions.
