Free from potentially harmful chemicals, natural crystal deodorant is safe for the body, and the environment; but, do crystal deodorants work?

A crystal body deodorant is the non-toxic deodorizing alternative. Conventional deodorants and antiperspirants work by masking odor and managing perspiration, at a cost however. They are manufactured with chemicals, which enter into the bloodstream and affect normal bodily functioning. Using a chemical-free deodorant is a great way to stay naturally fresh and clean, without compromising well-being. When used properly, crystal deodorants are very capable of preventing body odor.

What is Crystal Body Deodorant?

A crystal body deodorant is simply a blend of mineral salts, known as alum. There are no fragrances or synthetic materials, only deodorant crystal stones. Traditionally, they have been sold as a solid rock. With a little moisture, the mineral salts form a layer on the skin. Today, crystal deodorants can be found as a chunk of rock, but they are also available in stick, roll-on, or spray form.

Go Chemical-Free — Harmful Chemicals in Deodorant and Antiperspirants

Why use a natural, chemical-free deodorant if conventional brands work so well? For people with sensitive skin, crystal deodorants, or other non-toxic deodorizing alternatives, may be a necessity. For others, it is a matter of personal choice. There are chemical ingredients in deodorants and antiperspirants. With an awareness of what these ingredients are, and how they can affect the body, and the environment, consumers can make an informed decision when choosing a product.

  • Aluminum salts, specifically aluminum zirconium compounds, block the flow of sweat by clogging sweat glands. As aluminum merges with the body, there is potential for serious side effects. Aluminum is toxic, it can cause genetic mutations, and can act like estrogen in the body. There is some question as to whether this metal has any relationship with breast cancer. A known neurotoxin, there is also concern that aluminum contributes to Alzheimer's disease.
  • Talc is a fine powder, which has natural absorbent and deodorizing properties. It may also be a carcinogen.
  • Triclosan is a synthetic antibacterial agent. This chemical is not exactly nurturing to the human body, and very detrimental to the environment, especially water. Found not only in deodorants, but also soaps, hand wipes, and other products, triclosan finds its way into water systems, where it becomes a toxic polluter, that almost never breaks down. It is listed by the EPA as a pesticide.
  • Propylene glycol is found in many natural deodorants, which is why crystal deodorants are the purest, eco-friendly alternative. It acts as a natural moisturizer. While not a known carcinogen, it is toxic to skin cells.

The Science of Natural Crystal Deodorant

Without all of the chemicals found in deodorant and antiperspirants, how do alum mineral salts work? They simply protect against the bacteria which is responsible for body odor. The bacteria, which naturally exist on the surface of skin, cannot thrive on a layer of natural crystal deodorant. Without bacteria, odor is no longer an issue. Unlike conventional products, the mineral salts of crystal deodorants actually remain on top of the skin, rather than entering the bloodstream.

Using Crystal Deodorants

Using crystal deodorants is simple. With a rock or stick, add a little bit of water, and apply. With a roll-on crystal deodorant, or spray, use in the same way as a normal roll-on or spray product.

There are two important considerations however, with choosing a chemical-free crystal deodorant. First, it will not work if perspiration has already begun. Apply directly after bathing, when the underarms are clean and fresh. Second, it is not an antiperspirant. Although the risk of exposure to toxins, and the contribution of chemicals into the environment is gone, there is a sacrifice — the convenience of chemicals. Crystal deodorants are an individual choice, but one that may be worth considering.
